What is customs clearance?

It’s the formality that allows goods to enter or leave the EU customs territory legally. A declaration is lodged stating what the goods are, what they’re worth, where they come from and where they’re going; any duties and taxes due are paid; and customs authorises their release. Done right, it’s quick. Done badly, it’s the biggest bottleneck of the whole journey.
